It is not easy for a mother to understand how your child who left your home to volunteer to another country, and consent to her difficulty and struggles, could assimilate and live like the locals ,deprived of the basic necessities.
That was my dilemna. .I saw her transformation from afar, I read her story, i felt her struggles , I was struck by her determination and tenacity to stay and aspire to succeed.
My daughter volunteer to the Peace Corps. She believed in its mission and philosophy to make a difference in the lives of the African children.I supported her decision to leave a secured home and make a new home in the foreign land. I appreciate her vision and admire her aspirations . What i can't understand is how she felt neglected and deprived of basic amenities i.e security and safe haven . As a nurturing mother, I decided to send her those basic necessities, which proved to be expensive but necessary to adjust to her new environment. She is an independent adult, spirited but as a mother I cannot fathom how she accept these things with equanimity and with great humility. I am a mother who doesn't know the greatness of my child!
